Who this path is for

You have (or are close to) a job offer in Beijing and need the authorization chain: entry visa → work permit → residence permit. Your employer usually owns most filings; you own documents, timing, and in-person steps.

The journey (narrative)

1. See the big picture

A common sequence for many hires is:

  1. Employer notification / work-permit process
  2. Z (or other) visa to enter
  3. After arrival: complete work-permit formalities if still open
  4. Apply for a residence permit
  5. Keep temporary residence registration current wherever you sleep

Exact labels and order can vary. HR’s checklist beats a blog post.

Next: use the checklist in Work Permit & Residence.

2. Gather documents early

Typical asks include passport bio page, degree and authentication, no-criminal record (with legalization/apostille as required), photos, and medical exam items. Start long-lead documents before your last day at a previous job.

3. Know who does what

Employer / HR / agency: filings, invitation or notification letters, appointments they control.
You: accurate personal info, original documents, medicals, visa application at the consulate/embassy, and showing up on time in Beijing.

4. Enter, then finish local steps

After you land, expect a burst of tasks: medical (if required), biometrics or photo rules, work-permit card/status, then residence permit. Build buffer days; don’t book a long trip out of China until HR confirms your permit path allows it.

5. Registration is not optional

Where you stay must be registered. Hotels often do this for you; private housing usually means a police-station process with your landlord or agent.

Track expiry dates, keep HR in the loop for job changes, and store copies of every slip and card.
